Love and Marriage Part 1: I Love Me Some Him (Our Story)

I love music! I’ve told you that before, but it really is a major part of my life.  To me, life is but a song.  I also really love my hubby and this happens to be our anniversary week, so… most of my posts this week will be dedicated to him! Hope you don’t mind. 😉  In honor of our anniversary, I thought I’d tell you our story with the help of some lyrics from some of my favorite love songs!  This, of course, is the shortened version (well kinda)… but you’ll get the picture just the same.

“You think I’m pretty without any make-up on, You think I’m funny when I tell the punch line wrong, I know you get me, so I let my walls come down… ” -Katy Perry (Teenage Dream)

I met my husband in college.  We met as sophomore from what I remember, of course, he claims that we met freshman year. I thought he was really cute, but we were ‘just friends’ (really good friends) the entire time that we were in undergrad though my friends often asked me if I thought he liked me.  I didn’t think so, but apparently he did.

“If only you knew, how much I do, I do love you.”  -Patti LaBelle (If Only You Knew)

A couple of days after we graduated from college, we were at a party together (everyone was still there, packing up their things to move away) and he finally revealed his feelings for me.  He said, why not… if it didn’t go well, I’d be moving away soon, so it’s not like he’d have to see me everyday.  I was shocked, flattered, excited, nervous and a lot of other feelings too. I mean, this was my friend… how was this going to work?

“Boy I can’t seem to get you outta my head, but there’s something about you that makes me smile. Don’t change, I like the way you make me feel, can we take our time and do this for a while… You’re always on my mind.” -SWV (You’re Always on My Mind)

Once I moved back home, we continued to talk regularly, but hadn’t quite figured out how to move forward with this new information.  During a ride to work that summer, I confided in a colleague about the situation and through our conversation, I realized that I really liked him too (not that I had no clue, I just finally came to grips with it)! Every time I thought of him, I smiled uncontrollably… it was so obvious.

“All those days and lonely nights have all gone away, I never thought the day would come when we’d more than friends. You made me smile when I was down, you turn my world around, the way you give me love feels so right… I love me some him, I’ll never love this way again.  I love me some you, another man will never do.” -Toni Braxton (I Love Me Some Him)

Once I told him how I felt also, we moved into a new phase of getting to know one another on a different level.  The only problem was that I was starting law school that fall and he was starting grad school in a city nearly two hours away.  It would have to be a long distance relationship and neither of us were sure we were up for that.  In fact, he told me that he wasn’t and would check me out in about 3 years. LOL… I told him I wouldn’t wait for him during that time, but it was cool, and if I was available in 3 years, we’d see what happened.

“Darling I want you to listen, I stayed up all night, so I could get this thing right.  And I don’t think that anything’s missing, cause a person like you, makes it easy to do.  I’ve waited for so long, to sing to you this song.  Your eyes are the windows to heaven, your smile could heal a million souls, your love completes my existence… you’re the other half that makes me whole.” -Amel Larrieux (Make Me Whole)

But, love is love and it does what it does.  Obviously, we couldn’t wait to see what happened and we eased on into it.  It was such a fun courtship.  My law school girlfriends loved him, my homegirls adored him, my family loved him, my siblings looked up to him and I was in love with him. We were young so, we made the long distance love work.  Fast forward to my third year, he moved to the area for his line of work (he graduated a year before me).  We were physically closer, but I was no less busy.  However, we made it through (yay!!!)

“He proposed to me, He proposed with a diamond ring.  I started crying… I looked at my finger and I said yes.” -Kelly Price (He Proposed)

We got really serious and a few months after I graduated, we got engaged.  It was a great time for us.  Just over a year later… we were married and committed to spending the rest of our lives together.  And the rest as they say… is history!

“Always boy, I never knew a love like you before, You came into my life and gave me more, You are my friend, also my man and I’ll love you always. You, you just don’t know what you’ve done for me, you gave me love and now I’m complete.  You are the sun, the only one and I’ll love ya always. Baby, don’t leave me, don’t ever desert me, I’ll promise my life to you and I’ll love you always.” -Pebbles (Always)

  1. Love this post!!! Such a cute, sentimental way of writing how you feel about your husband. I use the Toni Braxton song a lot. What a great love story, have a great anniversary!

  2. Omg this is such a cute story! It’s a fairy tale, you usually only hear about this in movies but the fact that you both made it work and had such a beautiful friendship first is just the cutest thing. I think that’s true love! Happy anniversary to you both! I wish you man many more!
